Juan Martos Cuevas

Engineer · builder · from first principles

I’m Juan. I build the layers most people import — storage engines, search engines, LLM infrastructure, order books — and then the native apps that sit on top of them.

01Systems

Four systems, one repo per module.

Each ecosystem is built the hard way: every component in its own repository, with its own tests and README, and a strict rule — no imports between them. Then a flagship wires them together into something that works. Hover a node to trace its contracts.

01

Strata

Database engine

A relational database, from the page up.

Ten database components, each built in isolation with a strict no-cross-imports rule — then wired into nanosql, a working embeddable SQL engine.

02

Beacon

Search engine

A web search engine, from the crawler up.

Nine from-scratch pieces of search infrastructure assembled into a working search console over a real corpus — then scaled toward millions of pages.

03

AI Core

LLM infrastructure

The LLM stack, layer by layer.

Twenty components covering everything between raw documents and a working AI product — retrieval, inference, agents, fine-tuning, evaluation — plus the apps that orchestrate them.

04

Quant

Trading infrastructure

A trading system, from the tick up.

From a WebSocket feed and an L2/L3 order book to signals, an event-driven backtester, a pre-trade risk gate and a live terminal.

02Products

Shipped things, each in its own colours.

iOS, macOS, Windows, the edge, a microcontroller. Scroll through 12 of them — the page takes on each app’s palette as it passes.

01iOS/Network securityOpen source

TunnelVision

See exactly what your iPhone is talking to — a network monitor that runs entirely on the device.

  • Every connection, live: which apps reach which servers, on what ports, and how much data they move.
  • Follow a connection down to its packets and raw bytes; save any capture as a standard .pcap.
  • Audit mode: per-version sessions, consent markers and evidence bundles laid against BSI TR-03161.

Latent

Your second brain, on iPhone. Private. Local. Semantic.

  • Semantic search with a multilingual embeddings model running on the Neural Engine.
  • A knowledge graph of explicit @-links and connections discovered by similarity.
  • Chat with your notes through Apple Intelligence — on device, with citations to the source notes.

03macOS/Local AIOpen source

local-llm-studio

Your private AI studio, 100% on your Mac.

  • Chat with Llama, DeepSeek, Mistral, Gemma, Qwen and more through Ollama, streamed token by token.
  • A private RAG library with verifiable sources: every answer shows the exact fragments it was given.
  • Optional hybrid web search — the model only goes online when you decide.

04Desktop/Personal financeOpen source

MoneyWatcher

A local-first finance dashboard: drop in your bank statements, read your money as charts.

  • Imports any bank's CSV or Excel export — infers delimiter, encoding, header row, columns and number format.
  • Categorisation rules learnt from your own corrections: fix a shop once, it files itself forever.
  • Money is never a float — i64 minor units across the Rust ↔ TypeScript boundary.

TickerTape

A currency converter dressed as a Solari split-flap board.

  • Split-flap cards with simulated 3D physics and sequential mechanical clicks as values change.
  • DIN Alternate stretched vertically for extreme, industrial legibility.
  • A fixed, symmetrical ten-slot layout with a retro truncation indicator for long values.

06iOS/Sleep & focusApp Store

Wond

Sounds that keep you company — a minimalist white-noise app.

  • 21 curated sounds: rain, ocean, forest, café, fireplace, white noise and more.
  • Mix up to eight sounds, each with its own volume, or start from presets like Rainy Night.
  • A sleep timer with a soft fade-out, background audio and lock-screen controls.

GymBuddy

A strength-training log for the gym floor — one Cloudflare Worker, signed in with a passkey.

  • Log a set in two taps: the weight comes pre-filled and the rest timer starts on its own.
  • A 1,323-exercise catalogue with animated demos, searchable in plain language.
  • Works in the basement: sets queue in IndexedDB and drain in order when coverage returns.

08macOS/Developer toolOpen source

Menubar Telemetry

Claude, Gemini and OpenAI plan usage at a glance, from the macOS menu bar.

  • Real account-wide quota, read through Claude Code's own session — no API keys, no proxy.
  • A zero-setup log aggregator over ~/.claude/projects as a local fallback.
  • Gemini allowance and OpenAI API credit in the same popover.

09Windows/UtilityOpen source

PodDeck

AirPods battery in the Windows tray, read straight from Bluetooth advertisements.

  • Decodes Apple's undocumented proximity-pairing message, pinned by a test replaying a real AirPods Pro 3 frame.
  • Tells your AirPods apart through the product id, despite addresses that rotate every few minutes.
  • An iPhone-style case card, auto-pause when a pod leaves your ear, low-battery notifications.

The Autonomous Enclave

A local society of LLM citizens who perceive, reason and trade under computational scarcity.

  • Every citizen is a local model with a personality, an inventory and a SimCoin balance.
  • Perceive → Think → Act on every tick, with schema-validated JSON before anything touches the world.
  • A real market: accepting an offer moves the inference quota before the payment settles.

PlantPulse

DIY plant monitoring: ESP32 sensor nodes, a free Supabase backend and Telegram alerts.

  • A €15–25 node: capacitive soil probe, optional DHT22 and BH1750, all on an ESP32.
  • Deep sleep between readings every 30 minutes; the wireless variant runs for months on a LiPo.
  • Each plant carries its own thresholds — 'does it need water?' is a query, not a guess.

Bellows

A vintage folding camera that unfolds from the Dynamic Island.

  • Drag down from the notch and the leather bellows unfold into a viewfinder.
  • Elastic spring physics and Taptic Engine feedback on every mechanical action.
  • Cream paper, charcoal type, vintage leather and matte gold.

03Journey

From a first app to four systems.

  1. Jul 2025

    The first app

Convall, a cloud file converter in Flutter — "my very first app", with a video demo and a README explaining every file.

  2. Feb 2026

    On the App Store

TickerTape ships: a currency converter that flips like a Solari board. Version 2.0 is a full redesign.

  3. Jun 2026

    Local AI, on the phone

Latent puts embeddings on the Neural Engine and a knowledge graph in your pocket. Bellows starts as a camera that unfolds from the notch.

  4. Jun 2026

    Thirty-four repositories in two weeks

The AI Core (22 repositories) and Quant (12) ecosystems, built one module per repository, each with its own tests and README.

  5. Jul 2026

A database and a search engine

Strata and Beacon: twenty-two more repositories, built component by component, then nanosql and a search console that wire them into working products. Wond, local-llm-studio and the Enclave follow.

  6. Aug 2026

    Rejected, then open-sourced

TunnelVision is reviewed and rejected under Guideline 5.4 — nothing wrong with the app, only the account type — so it is published in full, under MIT. PlantPulse and MoneyWatcher ship the same month.

  7. Sep 2026

    At the edge

GymBuddy: a PWA and a Telegram bot on a single Cloudflare Worker, inside the free plan, signed in with a passkey.

  8. Nov 2026

    Reverse-engineering AirPods

PodDeck decodes Apple's undocumented Bluetooth proximity message to bring AirPods battery to Windows — 45 commits in a single day.
